TUFO TOWNS tour
The symbol representing the Cities of Sovana, Sorano and Pitigliano is the tufo element that has always characterized the area, all the territory is of volcanic origin and is indented by huge tufo buttresses, notched by numerous cliff caves, once inhabited and still used as warehouses or housing for agricultural tools. The tufo is linked to the history of this part of the Maremma Hills, over time this rock has allowed the ancient Etruscans and medieval prehistoric populations to exploit and shape the territory with necropoles, roads, pigeon holes and much more. Even the existing villages, made of houses leaning against each other and built with tufo give the feeling of being united with the spurs of rock below. The town of Pitigliano, is rich in Etruscan settlements, in fact all around the city and into the countryside, you can find numerous Etruscan tombs. In addition, the town of Pitigliano offers visitors a very unique view, built entirely on a tufo plan.
