AREZZO, CORTONA and ANGHIARI tour
Arezzo is a town founded by the Etruscans and later became important with the arrival of the Romans. The historic core is simple and elegant, with palaces and churches that testify to the importance of this center in the past centuries. Arezzo has produced some of the most important artists and writers of Italy, like Petrarca, Aretino and Vasari; Piero della Francesca and Vasari have embellished the city's churches, making this town a little gem. The heart of Arezzo is the scenic Piazza Grande, located in the highest part of the historic center. In this square, the unusual trapezoid shape, the famous show of medieval origins, the "Giostra del Saracino is held every year". Cortona is surrounded by walls that are still visible featuring Etruscan and Roman traces; it was built on a hill that reaches 600 meters in height. This elevated position ensures a good views from different points of the village and you can admire the beautiful landscapes of the Val di Chiana, seeing also lake Trasimeno . Several small shops selling handicrafts and local food are on the main streets of the village center. Anghiari is a small medieval jewel set on a hill of gravel accumulated over the centuries due to the passage of the Tevere river, which until the middle of 1200 ran at the foot of the village. In the plain just below the village, in 1440, there took place the Battle of Anghiari, famous because it was painted by Leonardo da Vinci, a masterpiece unfortunately believed lost. Anghiari, with its characteristic village protected by thirteenth century walls, preserves the atmosphere and charm of the small medieval village. Walking through the narrow streets of the village an air of the past can be felt and the hectic pace we are used to seem to be an almost distant memory.
