The majestic and charming Umbrian town of Orvieto is in a position to take your breath away, perched on top of steep cliffs of tufo, at 325 mt. above sea level in the middle of a beautiful landscape of fields and vineyards, in the flat valley of the Paglia river. In Orvieto everything dates back to a past visible everywhere: it was marked by the Etruscans, the Romans, the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. One of the pearls, but also one of the symbols of the city in the world, is the cathedral, which is also clinging to a tufo cliff. Nothing else can compete with the historic Cathedral also called, not without reason, the Golden Lily of Cathedrals. Orvieto is no less impressive for its palaces, towers and medieval and Renaissance churches. Another face of Orvieto is located in the heart of the medieval neighborhood and hides from the sun like the caves, passages and underground tunnels. Located on a hill of tufo in the middle of the valley, among the badlands (tufo), the old village of Civita di Bagnoregio seems to be suspended in the middle of nowhere like an island, which is currently only accessible over a scenic pedestrian bridge. For his particular condition, the poet Bonaventure Tecchi called Civita "the dying city"; in fact the hill is slowly crumbling away, eroding, leaving the village increasingly exposed and perched perilously on the rock. Entering the narrow streets which radiate out from the piazza seems to be a trip back in time where, in an almost unreal silence, you can enjoy romantic corners embellished with traces of past lives, flowers in the windows and sly sleeping cats. Ancient medieval buildings appear along with oil presses, Renaissance and humble homes of the people, the immense badlands surrounding it, with their crests and pinnacles, encircle this small town clinging to the life of its fragile hill of clay.
